20 February 2020 Alarming figures are those arriving from Italian rivers and lakes in the middle of winter. According to the Coldiretti survey, the hydrometric level of the Po has fallen and is as low as in the height of summer but anomalies are also seen in the large lakes which have filling percentages ranging from 25% of Como to 28% of the Iseo. Monitoring of Coldiretti shows that the hydrometric level of the Po river at Ponte della Becca, in the Pavia area, is -2.4 meters, the same as in mid-August.

The critical situation due to drought and high temperatures for the Po river, Coldiretti recalled, prompted the District Basin Authority to convene the Observatory on water crises for 6 March to take stock of the situation also because it does not if not minor precipitations are expected, for which further reductions in hydrometric levels could occur even by 20%.

"In the center and south, the situation is even more difficult with the drought alarm in the countryside that started from Puglia where - underlines Coldiretti - water availability has even halved in reservoirs compared to last year, according to the latest data from the Observatory Anbi which is also experiencing difficulties in Umbria with 75% less rain than last year, which fell in January and in Basilicata where about 2/3 of the available water resources are missing from the appeal compared to the same period of 2019 ".

"Difficulties - continues Coldiretti - also in Sardinia the Consorzio di Bonifica di Oristano have even set up the activation of irrigation systems in record time to guarantee water to the districts affected by the severe drought. In large areas of Sicily the fields are arid and the seeds cannot even germinate ".

All along the Peninsula, the association notes, we are dealing with an anomalous climate that has thrown nature into a tilt. So far the temperature in Italy has been 1.65 degrees higher than the historical average according to the calculations on Isac Cnr data for the months of December and January.
