According to TASS, the agency updated the forecast to the State Duma along with draft amendments to the Russian budget for 2020-2022.

It is noted that for 2021 the forecast was reduced from 147.3 million people to 147 million, for 2022 - from 147.7 million people to 147.2 million, for 2023 - from 148.2 million people to 147.4 million, for 2024 - from 148.7 million people to 147.5 million.

At the end of December, the Federal State Statistics Service announced that the total population of Russia at the beginning of 2020 would amount to 146.7 million people, and by 2036 a decrease to 142.9 million people is projected.

In the fall of 2019, the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov commented on the information of the Accounts Chamber on population reduction.

According to him, the Kremlin is aware of a negative trend in demography, which was taken into account when forming one of the national projects.

The first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Education and Science, Gennady Onishchenko, in an interview with the FAN, called for all efforts to maintain the optimal birth rate and ensure a decent life for families with children.
