The presidential election took place last September but both incumbent President Ashraf Ghani and his chief minister and chief contenders for the post Abdullah Abdullah claimed they had won.

Abdullah accused Ghani of electoral fraud and demanded that the votes be recalculated. The final result has now been presented by the Election Commission.
