A national minister in Northern Macedonia lost her post because of using the country's old name - Macedonia - on a banner at a press conference.

Labor Minister Rasila Mizrahi was removed from her post after a prolonged parliamentary debate that extended until the early hours of Sunday, with the approval of a majority of 62/26 votes.

The minister had appeared at least twice before a banner bearing the name of the Republic of Macedonia in the past weeks.

Northern Macedonia officially changed its name almost a year ago after a long battle with Greece, which includes a province called Macedonia.

Athens has argued that the former Yugoslav Republic's use of the Macedonian name harms Greek heritage and prevents the smaller country from joining international blocs such as NATO and the European Union.

Mizrahi belonged to the nationalist party, Famro-Dabman, which had never agreed to change the name.

Athena protested the appearance of the minister with the sign, which prompted the interim Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia Oliver Spasovsky to request the dismissal of Mizrahi. He said she violated the constitution and risked the country's attempts to forge ties with the West.

Spassovsky is leading a transitional government that includes the Vermo-Debmen party until new elections are scheduled for April 12.
