Since the publication of photos of Ingrid Escamilla's body, there has been enormous indignation in the country. On Friday February 14, angry young women demonstrated outside the presidency. On the walls of the building, the demonstrators traced this graffiti: "Feminicidal State", and sprayed the wooden doors with blood-red paint.
Julia, 24, came to express her anger: “ Today, we are here for Ingrid and for all the others. In these gutter newspapers, there is a half-naked woman on one side, and a woman in pieces on the other. What is the message sent to the company? We normalize violence against women and that's enough. We don't want these Ingrid images to be all that remains of her . ”
The trivialization of violence against women
In Mexico, an average of nine women are murdered every day. But the authorities do not seem to take the measure of the urgency , this is what deplores Georgina, another demonstrator: “ The dead accumulate in the pages of newspapers, and they remain there. The real question is: what will the state do? He has the tools to act: government, money, institutions. These are not isolated facts, Ingrid's killer did not get up one morning saying to himself " I'm going to butcher her " . For this protester, these are structural problems , just like impunity.
" How many Ingrid's are there in Mexico?" We are not numbers or news: we are women, ”says Georgina.
Questioned on the subject at his morning conference, President Andrès Manuel Lopez Obrador said " in favor of women and against feminicide ". The Interior Ministry has announced the opening of an investigation into the source of the photos published in the media.
