Two minors were charged with murder and detained on Thursday after a lengthy investigation into the death of a man in December 2018 in Herzeele, near Dunkirk, in the North, a we learned from the Dunkirk prosecution.

On the morning of December 4, 2018, "the gendarmes had found a dying man, who died shortly after," said the prosecutor of the Republic of Dunkirk, Sébastien Piève. "The results of the autopsy had made it possible to determine that the victim, aged 29, had been the victim of violence".

A “chance” encounter that goes wrong

After a long investigation, the investigators of the research section of the Lille gendarmerie were able to establish a link "between the death of the victim and several acts of delinquency committed during the night of the events in the same commune, in particular the theft of a van belonging to a company ”.

They were able to determine that after a "chance" meeting in the city center of Dunkirk with the individuals implicated, the victim would have "voluntarily taken place in the stolen van, before a dispute broke out". The alleged perpetrators then "stole her bank card and violently attacked her".

Tuesday, five people, "unfavorably known" of the gendarmerie services, were arrested and placed in police custody. Four were presented to the investigating judge on Thursday. Two of them, minors, "were indicted for murder and placed in pre-trial detention," said Sébastien Piève. Two others, minor at the time of the events and now major, were “charged with theft and placed under judicial supervision”.
