  • Put under investigation for concealment of breach of trust this fall, the socialist François Cuillandre will seek a fourth term in Brest.
  • The left will leave very divided in the city of Ponant with EELV which will go it alone while the former boss of the PS Finistère will lead the list of En Marche.
  • Candidate of the right and center, Bernadette Malgorn will want her revenge for 2014.

He is nicknamed "the lion". And at 65, François Cuillandre still wants to roar. At the head of the town hall of Brest since 2001, the elected socialist is well candidate for a fourth mandate. And it was not his indictment on October 17 for concealing breach of trust that dissuaded him. Because his "motivation is intact" and his indictment "does not mean a conviction," he said on November 4, announcing the continuation of his candidacy, validated 15 days later by the national office of the Socialist Party.

Despite his legal troubles, François Cuillandre therefore sets out again to fight to "keep the city on the left". A mission that will not be simple by the admission of Pierre Jouvet, spokesman for the PS, which provides for a "complicated" ballot. But for political scientist Romain Pasquier, François Cuillandre is still a big favorite for the election. "First there is the outgoing bonus with a good balance sheet on which he can rely," said the CNRS research director. During his mandates, the city changed its face with the tram, the cable car or the transformation of the Capuchins ”. François Cuillandre can also draw on his notoriety in his hometown and on the solid networks woven throughout his career.

EELV wants to surf on its good results at the Europeans

But unlike 2014, the left will leave very divided in March. Elected in 2014 on the list of the current mayor and vice-president of the metropolis, the ecologist Ronan Pichon will thus go it alone this year. He can count on the support of Thierry Fayret, first deputy of François Cuillandre, who decided to rally the candidate EELV after his defeat in the primary. As in Rennes, the Greens could therefore be the thorn in the side of the socialist majority, the party of Yannick Jadot wanting to build on its very good local results in the latest Europeans (18.4%).

Will the list of the Republic on the march be led by a figure well known to Brest socialists in the person of Marc Coatanéa. Former boss of the PS Finistérien for nine years, he joined Emmanuel Macron's party at the end of 2017. Despite the support of MoDem, he will not have an easy task according to Romain Pasquier. "His notoriety is lower compared to François Cuillandre," emphasizes the political scientist. And like everywhere, the En Marche label is going to be a drag. ”

Former prefect Bernadette Malgorn wants revenge

To the right of the chessboard, we also find Bernadette Malgorn, the former prefect of Brittany, who will want her revenge after her defeat in 2014 against François Cuillandre (47.3% of the votes in the second round). "There would have to be a triangular or a quadrangular for it to have a chance," says Romain Pasquier. And then he would have to find allies because the Brest right is traditionally very divided ”.

Behind these four candidates, other lists will try to be heard during the municipal election in Brest with the presence of Pierre-Yves Cadalen for rebellious France, Renée Thomaïdis for the National Rally, Rémy Collard for Lutte Ouvrière or Pascal Olivard (without label).
