It was in July 2018 that Matteo Salvini decided not to allow the over 100 migrants who were on the ship Bruno Gregoretti to go ashore. A Sicilian court therefore wants him to be tried for obstructing migrants' freedom of movement. But in order for Matteo Salvini to be prosecuted, the Senate was required to lift his immunity.

On Wednesday morning, the 319 senators debated the issue and the message was clear in the afternoon. The Senate chooses to revoke his indictment,

Matteo Salvini himself has previously said that he encourages the matter to be tried in court, saying that Prime Minister Guiseppe Conto supported his decision to prevent migrants from going ashore.

If sentenced, Matteo Salvini could receive 15 years in prison.
