Dunkirk police officers carried out a wave of arrests this Monday morning, a week after the beating of a young volunteer firefighter on the sidelines of the Black Cat ball. Six young men were taken into police custody.

In one week, the police from the Dunkirk police station collected numerous testimonies and viewed the video surveillance tapes of the commune. These elements enabled them to identify six people, suspected of being involved in the brawl which resulted in the victim ending up in a coma.

Six young suspects, most of them minors

According to police sources, the six accused are minors or young adults living in the Dunkirk agglomeration. Their homes were also searched. During police custody, which must last a maximum of 48 hours, the investigators will have to determine the responsibilities of each.

On the night of Saturday, February 1 to Sunday, February 2, the 27-year-old volunteer firefighter, who was not on duty, interposed in a brawl between two groups to rescue the injured, police said. He was then taken to task by a dozen individuals who had beaten him before leaving him for dead and fleeing. The facts took place on the sea wall, near the Kursaal, where the famous black cat ball was held, which marks the opening of the Carnival.

The young man had been transported in absolute emergency to the Lille hospital center with a vital prognosis committed. Placed in an artificial coma, his state of health is still very worrying but he has never been in a state of brain death, as may have been written elsewhere.
