The Director of the Traffic Department in Dubai Police, Brigadier Saif Muheir Al Mazrouei, stated that during the year 2019, excess speed caused 23 traffic accidents, resulting in four deaths and 19 injuries, which varied between the severe, medium and minor, pointing out that the risk of this behavior doubles when combined with another violation , Such as using a mobile phone while driving, or busy and not paying attention, because a person's ability to make the right decision decreases the faster the speed is.

Al Mazrouei told «Emirates Today» that the General Traffic Department recorded 21 thousand and 177 violations during the past year for drivers who exceeded the speed limit for the road by more than 60 km per hour, pointing out that the fine due on that violation is 2000 dirhams, 12 traffic points and 30 days as a vehicle seizure.

He added that the administration is keen to analyze the causes of traffic accidents in periodic meetings, to reduce their recurrence, and has resorted to proposing several solutions through the accidents and deaths index during the past years, such as reducing speed on some of the streets that are more intense, such as the Emirates Roads and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, However, there remains an ethical and legal responsibility for drivers, because despite the incentives and initiatives put in place by the Dubai Police to encourage compliance, such as the traffic violation deduction initiative, there is a category of drivers that tend to violate the traffic law, and unacceptably exceed the speed.

Al Mazrouei said that registering more than 21 thousand violations for people who exceeded the speed by more than 60 km per hour is an indication of the importance of deterrence for this category of drivers, especially since driving at an excessive speed is often accompanied by dangerous violations, such as not leaving enough distance between vehicles, and sudden deviation.

He emphasized that, in return, it must be noted with large numbers of drivers, who responded positively to the initiative of deduction of the leading traffic violations launched by Dubai Police over a whole year, with an out-of-the-box thinking, which is to reward future drivers for their previous violations, as thousands of drivers were keen not to commit violations Traffic, but were inquiring and reviewing the administration if they inadvertently involved in minor violations, and Dubai Police interviewed this by not depriving them of the opponent, as long as their violations did not represent a danger to others, and they were committed without intent.

Al Mazrouei said that the Traffic Violation Initiative, which benefited tens of thousands, confirms the Dubai Police’s keenness on the safety of road users before considering a non-compliant traffic violation, because every violation may be the cause of a traffic accident, so it is not possible to tolerate reckless drivers who threaten The safety of others, especially over speeders, who drive aggressively.

- Large numbers of drivers responded positively to the initiative to discount traffic violations.
