ECOWAS gives Guinea-Bissau 6 days to settle electoral disputes

The Cédéao granted, this Sunday, February 9, a short deadline until February 15 for the justice of Guinea-Bissau to settle electoral disputes.

The PAIGC candidate, the ruling party, Domingos Simões Pereira, submitted this week a new appeal to the Supreme Court of Guinea-Bissau requesting the cancellation of the elections held on December 29 last. The Election Commission having reiterated the victory of the opposition candidate , Umaro Sissoco Embalo.

The ECOWAS , Economic Community of West African States, met at an extraordinary summit of heads of state and government in Addis Ababa, on the sidelines of the African Union summit to discuss, specifically, the political situation in Guinea-Bissau. The meeting chaired by the Nigerian head of state, Mahamadou Issoufou, acting president of the regional bloc, also counted on the presence of the Bissau-Guinean Prime Minister, Aristides Gomes.

" It will allow us to move forward "

For the Ivorian Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, president of the ECOWAS commission, “ the heads of state have examined this question at length. They therefore asked that the Supreme Court examine this question in accordance with the constitutional provisions of Guinea-Bissau and that this be done as soon as possible, so the date set is February 15, 2020. So we have given a deadline to the Supreme Court to really settle this question . "

The deadline is therefore six days " since the appeals are already at the level of the Supreme Court ", explains Jean-Claude Kassi Brou. " We think that with this decision of the heads of state, it will allow us to move forward, because the objective is to quickly achieve institutional and political normalization of Guinea-Bissau ", adds T -he
