The president of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation and wife of the former president of the Generalitat, Diana Garrigosa, died unexpectedly on Monday at age 76, sources from the Foundation have reported.

Since Pasqual Maragall announced, on October 20, 2007, that she was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, Diana Garrigosa had been dedicated to taking care of her husband, former mayor of Barcelona and former president of the Generalitat, whom she accompanied in almost all her public appearances.

Garrigosa was a graduate in Economics from the University of Barcelona (UB) and a Master in Economics specializing in Econometrics from the New School for Social Research in New York.

She has worked at the Municipal Computer Center of the Barcelona City Council and as a computer teacher at the Escola Aula de Barcelona.

Like her husband, she was a member of the PSC, a formation she left in 2006.

The president of the Generalitat, Quim Torra, has lamented his death : "We will keep a special place in our individual and collective memory."

In a statement on Monday, he recalled "his example and his character", thanked his work and sent a hug to the former president Maragall and his family and friends.

The Catalan president has also expressed his gratitude "for the vocation of service to the country and, in recent years, to the cause of the fight against Alzheimer's".

The Minister of Health of the Generalitat, Alba Vergés, who has expressed his condolences and acknowledged Garrigosa's work against Alzheimer's disease, has also joined the condolences.

"My condolences to all his family and a great recognition for the fight he led against Alzheimer's," he said in a tweet.
