The authorities in Kazakhstan announced that the death toll of a series of riots occurred in the southern province of Gambel to at least 10 people, after a number of people died from their wounds.

The Deputy Minister of Health said that there are about 40 people receiving treatment in the hospital, where a number of them are in the intensive care unit.

On Sunday, Kazakhstan's President, Qasim-Gomart Tokayev, accused the rioters and government officials of being behind the riots.

The president ordered that an investigation be carried out into the outbreak of the violence, which is said to have involved hundreds of people who have destroyed dozens of homes and cars.

More than 40 people were arrested in Gambel after the riots, and most of them were released on conditions.

It was not clear what caused the riots, and according to the Ministry of Interior, the spark may have been the result of a dispute over the use of a road.
