February 7, 2020 Foxconn, the Taiwanese giant, Apple's partner, for which it assembles the iPhones, announces that it has started the production of surgical protective masks at the Loghua Park plant in Shenzhen.

Foxconn's goal is to produce masks to protect itself from the coronavirus at the rate of 2 million units per day, a capacity that it will reach by the end of February.

"Face masks are now the standard equipment in our fight against the epidemic," said Foxconn on his official WeChat social media site.

"Every second counts in this battle, the sooner we can guarantee a supply of these goods, the sooner we can stop the epidemic, save lives and overcome these difficult times."

Foxconn also specified that anticoronavirus masks will initially be intended for internal use for its hundreds of thousands of employees, most of whom work in China.

Similar operations have also been announced by other large companies operating in China in other sectors, such as SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile, a joint venture between General Motors and two Chinese companies, which will modify 14 production lines to build 1, 7 million masks per day. Foxconn's vast network of factories in China, whose official name is Hon Hai Precision Industry, will reopen next February 10 after the lunar New Year holiday, prolonged due to the coronavirus epidemic.

"We have succeeded in producing tests and are requesting certification. We expect to be able to produce 20 million masks by the end of February," says Foxconn.
