The head of the IAEA ruled out the possibility of recognition of the DPRK as a nuclear power

He stated this during a speech at the Carnegie Center in Washington.

According to him, the NPT recognizes only a certain number of states as legitimate owners of nuclear weapons. He specified that the DPRK cannot be recognized as a nuclear power without amending the treaty.

“From a legal point of view, there is no doubt that there can be no recognition (of North Korea as a nuclear power. - RT),” RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

In his view, such a move would weaken international standards.

“And any violation of this kind will be incredibly bad. They left the NPT to create nuclear weapons. This is very clear, ”said the IAEA Director General.

In January, the DPRK spoke about the terms of negotiations with the United States on denuclearization.
