Romney opposed Trump - wanted to topple the president

Felling, and thus deposing, the president had demanded a two-thirds majority. At the same time, Republicans hold 53 of the Senate's total 100 seats. Thus, of the Republican senators, one chose to break the party line: Mitt Romney.

"The president is guilty of horrific abuse of public confidence," said an emotional Romney before the Senate vote.
