3,471 people are affected by the presidential pardon decree. These are sentenced persons, whether or not they are incarcerated, and who have only six months to serve. Those who are on parole or who have had a temporary suspension of sentence are also affected.

This measure is usual in Algeria and took place, when Abdelaziz Bouteflika was president, on the occasion of national holidays. This time, the pardon is of a similar magnitude, but it will therefore concern certain demonstrators who have been sentenced, whether they are in prison or have been released.

However, it does not concern people who are still awaiting trial. Thus the pre-trial detention of the president of the RAJ association, Abdelouahab Fersaoui, was extended this Tuesday by four more months.

The presidency announces that a second group of people will be affected by the pardon, those who have one year in prison to go.

And "The pardon measures also include, among the categories concerned, individuals benefiting from the parole system or the provisional suspension of sentence"
