Prince Mohammed Ben Zayed made the announcement on Sunday, February 2, during the visit to Abu Dhabi of Mauritanian number one, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. The United Arab Emirates will allocate two billion dollars (1.8 billion euros) to Mauritania, a substantial sum for this poor country member of the G5 Sahel engaged in the fight against jihadists.

This is a fitting announcement for Nouakchott, a member of an armed coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in Yemen. Indeed, the new Mauritanian president has just announced the start of his policy of major works.

Two billion dollars is, for Mauritania, the equivalent of 40% of its GDP, its national wealth. In proportion, it is as if France received a check for $ 960 billion.

Suffice to say that the amount promised by the United Arab Emirates is likely to stimulate the Mauritanian economy. All of this is perfectly fine for President El Ghazouani, who has just launched his plan of 41 billion ouguiyas - about a billion dollars - dubbed "the priorities" and which Mauritanians have been wondering how it would be financed so far.

Part of the UAE funds will be used for the ambitious road program. The head of state wants to build 1,000 kilometers of roads and 300 kilometers of urban roads, but also schools - 400 classrooms -, ports and airports. The Mauritanian presidency praises the social aspects of this policy, especially towards the underprivileged.

Nouakchott has just capitalized, in Abu Dhabi, its support for the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Mauritania, in fact, joined the military coalition engaged in Yemen against the Houthi rebels.

Our countries have a long history of strong relationships. Today, we have many opportunities to deepen these ties, to strengthen cooperation in various fields and to consult each other on the problems and developments in the region, "Prince Mohammed Ben Zayed wrote on his Twitter account. the Mauritanian president.
