The commercial liner "Grande Nigeria", in 2003, after a collision with another ship in the Netherlands - VIRGINIA MAYO / AP / SIPA

Senegalese customs and police discovered on Tuesday 120 kg of cocaine on the ship "Grande Nigeria". It had been stranded at the quay in the port of Dakar since they found, in June 2019, 800 kg hidden in vehicles transported in the boat from Brazil and bound for Angola.

The drug was in the ventilation system, in four bags containing 30 one-kilo pads, the customs said in a statement. "We are trying to find out if the cocaine was already in the ship" in June 2019 and would not have been spotted because the building had not been fully excavated, "or if it was introduced there after. The investigation will answer these questions, "said a customs official.

More than a ton of cocaine in 2019

For the moment, the information collected does not allow us to say whether the discovery was fortuitous or made possible by information. The value of the seizure is estimated at 9.6 billion CFA francs, or 14.6 million euros.

In addition, several people were arrested in June 2019. The Senegalese navy had seized at the end of October 2019, off Dakar, more than a tonne of cocaine allegedly coming from Latin America and bound for Spain. Five people were arrested, according to the army and customs.
