“The sanctions demonstrate that Canada and its allies are united in their condemnation of Russia's annexation of Crimea and the holding of illegal elections there last fall,” the minister said.

Earlier, the US Treasury Department expanded the list of sanctions against Russia, eight individuals and the Grand Express Service company, which is the operator of passenger rail transport to Crimea, fell under the new measures.

Also on January 28, the European Union added seven Russians to the sanctions list for Ukraine, who, in his opinion, are responsible for holding elections in Crimea in September 2019.

Crimea became the Russian region after a referendum held there in March 2014, in which most residents spoke out for reunification with Russia.
