January 28, 2020 "At the top of the ranking of disposable income per inhabitant, the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-Bozen is confirmed, with 26 thousand Euros (25.3 million in 2017), followed by Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy (22.9 million). Calabria closes the ranking with 12.7 thousand euros, preceded by Campania and Sicily (respectively 13.5 thousand euros and 13.6 thousand euros) ". Istat notes this based on 2018 data. A ranking is that of per capita income which returns the image of a split country, with a richer North and a poorer Mezzogiorno.

In 2018, GDP in volume increased by 1.4% in the North-east, by 0.7% in the North-west and in the Center and by 0.3% in the South, Istat notes, underlining that the GDP pro capite sees the area of the North-West at the top of the ranking with a nominal value of over 36,000 euros, almost double that of the South, equal to about 19,000 euros per year. Families living in the Northwest have the highest level of income per inhabitant (over 22,000 euros), almost 60% more than those in the South (14,000 euros).

At the regional level, the Marche region recorded the highest GDP growth, with a 3% increase over the previous year. A decisive recovery of production is also observed for Abruzzo, where GDP grew by 2.2% compared to 0.6% in 2017, and for the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-Bozen (+ 2%). Above the national average, three other regions of the South are positioned: Sardinia and Puglia (+ 1.4%) and Molise (+ 1.2%).

In Lombardy, economic growth slows down significantly: in 2018, GDP increased by 0.5%, compared to + 2.2% in the previous year. Lazio (-0.2%) and Sicily (-0.3%) close 2018 with a decrease in GDP in volume, but the most significant decreases are found in Campania (-0.6%) and Calabria (-0, 8%). As for household consumption expenditure, the trend in 2018 is positive and equal to 0.9% just above that of GDP (+ 0.8%). The most significant increases in household consumption by volume are recorded in Liguria and Lazio (+ 1.7% in both regions), followed by Abruzzo (+ 1.5%), Umbria and Molise (+ 1.4%).

A sharp slowdown in household spending is found, however, for the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-Bozen and for Piedmont, where consumption increased by only a modest 0.3%. With 36,200 euros in 2018 (35,700 in 2017), the Northwest remains the geographical area with the highest GDP per inhabitant (measured in nominal terms). Follow the Northeast, with 35,100 euros (34,300 euros in 2017) and the Center, with 31,600 euros (31,100 euros in 2017). The South, with 19,000 euros (just over half of that of the Northwest), slightly exceeds the 2017 level (18,700 euros).

Submerged and illegal economy at 13.5%, in the South 19.4%
The underground and illegal economy in Italy represents 13.5% of the total added value (the incidence on GDP is equal to 12.1%). Istat notes this with reference to 2017, underlining that the most relevant components in terms of weight are the revaluation of the under-declaration of the economic results of the companies (6.2%) and the employment of irregular work (5.1% ). The illegal economy and other minor components (tips, black and white and demand-supply integration) account for the remaining 2.2%.
