The two men sustained life-threatening injuries from the cutter. One received three chops or stabs in the chest. A stick injured his left lung so badly that it was considered life-threatening.

The other man is stabbed in the abdomen, chest and left arm. The cut or stab in the chest took so badly that the left descending branch of the heart was cut off. This led to severe bleeding which in turn led to a heart attack with acute heart failure. Without treatment, he would have died.

The course of events

The 21-year-old arrived in Valdemarsvik so late that the festival had ended. Both he and a mate were masked with so-called bandanas. On Garvaregatan he met two men and trouble arose. Who or who started the fight has not been clarified.

The convicted person says he acted in emergency defense, but the district court considers the violence to have been "manifestly unjustifiable". The court also writes in the judgment; "That the 21-year-old was completely indifferent to the fact that they could both die from the cutting."

However, since the deed was not planned, he is sentenced to attempted murder and not murder. The events are recorded on video and a large number of witnesses have been heard during the trial.

In addition to the prison sentence, the 21-year-old will pay a total of approximately SEK 325,000 in damages to the two plaintiffs. He will also remain in custody until the sentence gains legal force.
