  • Patrick Balkany was sentenced to 4 years in prison for "tax fraud" and 5 years for "money laundering". He was incarcerated on September 13, 2019.
  • Since then, the mayor (LR) of Levallois-Perret has filed three requests for release.
  • The Paris Court of Appeal notably demanded a deposit of 500,000 euros so that he could recover his freedom.

He therefore remains in prison. The Paris Court of Appeal denied Monday's request for Patrick Balkany's release. The mayor of Levallois is therefore kept in his cell of the prison of Health, which he reinstated after his hospitalization.

#Balkany: Justice refuses to release Patrick Balkany. "Detention remains the only way to keep Patrick Balkany at the disposal of justice"

The court also refused to remove or lower the bail by 500,000 euros, saying that detention and bail were the only solutions to keep Patrick Balkany at the disposal of justice.

New appeal trial in February

The 71-year-old elected official has been imprisoned since September 13, the day he was sentenced to four years in prison for tax fraud at first instance. A month later, he was sentenced to five years in prison for aggravated money laundering with a new warrant.

His fraud appeal trial was held without him (decision on March 4) and the money laundering trial will begin on February 3. His lawyer produced at the hearing last week medical certificates attesting to a "deterioration of the general condition" of Patrick Balkany, with "the loss of 24 kg in four months".
