  • Foreign countries: Spain will reject unilateral changes of the maritime border with Morocco if there is no agreement between the two

The president of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, said Saturday that the legislative process of Morocco to delimit the waters is a text in which "there is no map, there is no clear path or limit" in this regard, while considering that has "no chance of prospering".

Torres thanked the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, to the Canary Islands after traveling to Morocco, explained that the file of the legislative process initiated by the neighboring country began in 2017, to pass in December 2019 to Parliament's commission and approve it in January 2020 in the Moroccan Chamber. Now, he must go to the Senate to return again to the Parliament of Morocco and sign it the King, to then publish a decree, which would have validity.

He added, in declarations to the journalists, that if said decree were published with an approach in the layout that touches only one millimeter the waters of the Canary Islands, they have the "commitment of Spain" that "automatically the Government of Spain will raise its complaint, his outrage at the UN ".

In any case, he admitted that he is "aware that any State can approve a delimitation" in its administrative bodies, as well as "it must know that such a proposal has no course if it does not have the approval of the countries with which it has a border" .

On the other hand, he considered "important" the demonstrations made yesterday by the Moroccan Foreign Minister, Naser Burita, in which he "flatly affirmed that there was not going to be unilateralism," just as "he was not going to have accomplished facts."

Torres wanted to influence that "not a single millimeter of the waters of the Canary Islands is going to be touched", at the time that he considered that in the face of this type of question "it is good first that I acted diplomacy, when proposals are made that do not comply with the international legislation, and that it is diplomacy that fixes proposals that do not have any type of route ", to consider that the text has" no chance of prospering ".

Anyway, he considered that "it is good" that Spain has a good relationship with Morocco and vice versa, so he said he will travel to Morocco "at the right time" because it is a country that together with Venezuela, is "norm" that they are among the first that the Canarian presidents visit, as well as he stressed that "ties" with countries such as Mauritania or Senegal, "keys for example for Western security, also for migratory struggle" must be maintained.
