A restaurant, Tom's Diner in Denver, Colorado (United States), adds an additional 38 cents, or 34 cents, on a customer's note for each "silly question" asked, reports the American daily Today . This supplement appears clearly on the invoice.

On a sales receipt published on Reddit, after the two dishes invoiced to the customer, the mention "stupid question" appears. "It was on the menu to make people smile," said a former cook at Tom's Diner in a comment below the published photo. He also specifies that "the servers never add this supplement unless a client requests it".

Customers disappointed not to be billed

This tax, whose price has varied over the years, appears as a supplement on the menu for more than 20 years and is the particularity of this restaurant open 24 hours a day. "It often happens that customers are disappointed not to be billed for asking a stupid question, so they ask one voluntarily so that the waiter then adds it to the bill," said the former cook.

"The majority of customers understand that this is a joke and something fun," said Hunter Landry, manager of the place. "When we have a fun table who joins us or when they ask questions about this tax, it's always fun to add it," said the man who is also the nephew of the founder of the restaurant. "It's a way of not taking yourself seriously," he concludes.
