The Orbieu river, Wednesday, in Lagrasse, in the Aude - V. Bonzom

The night was particularly eventful, in Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales. Since Tuesday, these departments in the south of France have been facing severe weather, rain or snow depending on the altitude, consequences of the Gloria storm. No casualties are to be deplored, however.

Some 1,500 people were evacuated in the Pyrenees-Orientales, and more than 250 in Aude, said the prefectures on Thursday. In the Pyrénées-Orientales, 240 people spent the night in gymnasiums, notably in Claira, one of the six towns crossed by the Agly, to have evacuated part of its population. The majority of people have found refuge with relatives, however. Floods have impacted some homes, especially around Limoux, in Aude.

Red vigilance is maintained

More than a thousand households are deprived of electricity this Thursday morning in the Pyrénées-Orientales. All transportation is suspended, and parents are advised not to bring their children to schools.

Météo France maintained “raw red vigilance” in the departments of Pyrénées-Orientales and Aude, for the Agly and Aude rivers, north of Perpignan and south of Carcassonne respectively. "We are in a recession phase at the Agly level, since the water level has gone from 7.40 m to 6.90 m," Kévin Mazoyer, secretary general of the prefecture of the Pyrénées-Orientales. The Agly remains vigilant red because of the risk of breakage of the dikes.

"We must remain vigilant"

“We remain fully vigilant because precipitation is still to come. In Claira, public spaces are flooded. Evacuation instructions are still in effect. In the 300 m strip on either side of the Agly, you must continue to comply with the safety instructions. It is a phase of recession, but there is significant precipitation which is announced, we must remain vigilant, "he underlined.

"I am not sure that the water has finished rising, it is still rising, our vigilance is always supported, people are still accommodated until further notice, says for her part Hélène Malé, the mayor of Claira. Security must take precedence over everything else. Precipitation, fluctuating in intensity, will last until Thursday noon, mainly affecting a large eastern half of the Pyrénées-Orientales.
