Juan Guaido at the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs, January 21, 2020. Alberto Pezzali / Pool

Venezuelan opponent Juan Guaido is on a tour of Europe to gather support when he only receives less than 40% support from his compatriots. It must be said that in one year the situation has not really changed in this country which is going through an unprecedented political, social and humanitarian crisis.

After again blocking the Parliament of deputies who support Juan Guaido, the police raided this Tuesday, January 21, the opponent's office in the Zurich tower in Caracas, reports our correspondent in Caracas, Benjamin Delille . Several deputies quickly went to the scene for fear that the agents of Sebin (the Venezuelan intelligence services) would take advantage of the absence of Juan Guaido and his team to file false evidence. According to MPs, they did not have a warrant to search the premises.

" What we have learned is that it is an anti-corruption commission," said MP Adriana Pichardo. And what we fear is that they will forge false documents to implicate President Guaido, the Assembly or his team in any illegal act, because that is what they do when want to sue someone. "

During the entire duration of the search, parliamentarians were unable to access the offices. For MP Delsa Solorzano, the aim of this operation is also to divert media attention from more important subjects. " First, try to hide the fact that today a parliamentarian has been kidnapped, " she points out. Today they arrested Ismael Leon. Then try to hide the success of President Juan Guaido's international tour, which will only bring good news for Venezuela. "

From London, Juan Guaido did not give more details on this good news to come, but he was indignant at the disappearance of the deputy Ismael Leon and the search in his offices.

A tour to try to convince

Despite a popularity that continues to decline, the fault of a context that does not evolve, the opponent tries to convince the international community, but also and above all his compatriots that he is the man for the job. If he remains recognized as interim president by more than fifty countries in the world, Juan Guaido does not have the same aura among Venezuelans.

In Bogota, Colombia, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed his support on Monday, while announcing new sanctions against the regime of Nicolas Maduro.

Still enjoying the support of a large part of the nations of the region, the President of the National Assembly, who declared himself interim president a year ago, must then go to Brussels on Wednesday to meet Josep Borrel, the new High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The latter intends to change the approach of the European Union, modeled so far on that of the United States, and sees with a negative eye the multiplication of sanctions from which Venezuelans also suffer.

Juan Guaido will then go to the Davos forum. The idea, according to the Venezuelan opposition, is to make concrete proposals for a way out of the crisis. If 2019 was a year of learning, 2020 must be the year of action, according to the statement from the interim presidency. Still, in the meantime, it is the regime of Nicolas Maduro which still ensures the royal functions.
