The international ideas competition that will not finally be carried out in the reform of the Puerta del Sol, upon recovering the 2014 winning project in Piensa Sol, will have a new recipient: the Prado-Recoletos axis, a candidate for Unesco World Heritage , and in which the auditor of that organization appreciated "deficiencies" during his visit last October, as EL MUNDO advanced.

That is why the City Council of the capital, in collaboration with the Official College of Architects of Madrid ( COAM ), will open a contest of ideas to "redignify" this axis of the capital, confirmed yesterday the mayor at the headquarters of the professional college. "We want to open a period of reflection to carry out possible reforms in the area of the entire Paseo de Carlos V and Plaza de Colón, " said the mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, who said he would join the segregated bike path of the Paseo de la Castellana approved unanimously in the Plenary of Cibeles in December taking this axis to the Chamartín station.

"This is an old aspiration for which we are already starting to get late," confessed the councilman, who has placed the problem that this is "one of the main routes of entry of private vehicles" in the capital. Precisely, that was one of the criticisms - denied by the municipal corporation - that the inspector of Unesco presented to the Madrid candidacy during his visit to the capital for "the lack of a continuous pedestrian walk" at a point where there is even eight lanes of circulation.

This international competition will be the first to open a series of joint works between the Madrid Consistory and the COAM, as stated yesterday by the dean of the same, Belén Hermida , who will be focused on the main road between the north and south of the city through the Paseo de la Castellana and the Paseo del Prado.

From the Consistory they consider that this "is the ideal time" to undertake the reforms at this point in the city, taking advantage of the fact that at both ends there are the Atocha and Chamartín stations , which will soon be reformed creating an "important repercussion" in the urban centers that surround them.

This first international competition on which the municipal corporation and COAM will work will focus on reforming the gazebo of Carlos V, the front area of the Atocha station until reaching the Pavilion of the Illustrious Men and will also include the environment of the Reina Sofía Museum to "provide homogeneity and integrity" to this area of the city.

An area that the Deputy Mayor of the capital, Begoña Villacís, put in value yesterday, with special emphasis on the reform that will be undertaken on this axis to "achieve a more livable and international city". "Everyone believes that the cultural axis of Madrid ends in Atocha, and that is not the case, because beyond we have La Casa Encendida , the Ministry of Agriculture , the Royal Tapestry Factory ", the municipal number two affected and then pointed out that in Today this is an "inhospitable, hostile and harsh" place.
