The president in charge of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, will soon visit Spain . But it is still in the air that will be received by Pedro Sánchez. At the moment, the Presidency of the Government does not confirm it. And he even unofficially points out that most likely the person in charge of receiving the Venezuelan president, leader of the opposition to Nicolás Maduro, is the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya.

Foreign Affairs sources add that there is still no closed date for that trip, which could occur this week, probably on Saturday.

This has been confirmed by the minister herself at a press conference in Brussels. González Laya has said that he is "available" to Guaidó to receive him and to "discuss how Spain, as part of the European Union, can contribute to the solution" of the conflict in his country.

The Venezuelan leader will be this week in Brussels, where he will be received by the high representative for the EU Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell. Subsequently, he plans to attend the Davos Forum in Switzerland.

It is later when I could travel to Madrid. The first time that the minister could meet Guaidó in Spain would be next Saturday, on the return of a trip to Morocco and Algeria.

What is not closed is the possibility that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez , receives the Venezuelan leader. The head of the Spanish Executive recognized Juan Guaidó as legitimate president of Venezuela a year ago.

The Spanish minister has attended this Monday in Brussels to her first meeting with the 27 Foreign headlines. The presidents have been talking about the possible extension of the sanctions imposed on Venezuela. At the meeting, they agreed that this "could be a way forward." But the content of these new sanctions and who they could affect has not yet been discussed.

González Laya has reiterated Spain's support for Guaidó as president in charge. And he has reiterated that the objective of the Government is to achieve "a negotiated policy among Venezuelans" that goes through elections that can be held as soon as possible and with the maximum democratic guarantees.

In the short term, Spain is committed to an action plan coordinated by the EU for the coming months. To boost it, the international contact group will be convened, which has not met since October 28. Laya has offered to let Spain host the next meeting of this group, "always if it were useful and timely," he added.
