Before and after view of the site concerned with the National Theater of Nice and the Acropolis Palace - Estrosi2020 / Montage 20 Minutes

  • During his very first meeting on Sunday, the candidate mayor of Nice announced that he wanted to continue his green flow by razing the National Theater of Nice and a congress center.
  • Its competitors reacted strongly. They denounce in particular the cost of this possible project and the new major works that will ensue.

"Anything big", "I believed in a Fake News", "a real drift" ... Quickly mocked by many of its competitors, the announcement of Christian Estrosi, Sunday during his very first meeting , had the effect of a small bomb in the premises of the campaign for municipal elections in Nice. If he is re-elected for a third mandate, the outgoing mayor has promised to shave the Acropolis Palace, from where he was speaking, and the National Theater of Nice (TNN) to be able to continue its green flow.

"In agreement with its director and the Minister of Culture, the TNN, which requires enormous and costly upgrading work, will be relocated [in the old church of the] Franciscans, place Saint-François" and "Acropolis, demolished, will be replaced by a modern exhibition center closer to the airport, ”detailed Christian Estrosi.

"Destroy buildings built around thirty years ago"

While the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Mamac) would be kept in situ , the theater would therefore be transferred to the old religious building at Place Saint-François, a few steps away. Renovated by the city since 2018, the place was planned, at the time, to accommodate a cultural space dedicated to the history of Nice. And according to Christian Estrosi's project, the 21,000 m2 of the convention center would simply be razed.

"He therefore wants to destroy buildings built only thirty years ago and renovated at great cost by the taxpayer in 2011 with the help of great architects such as Jean-Michel Wilmotte to plant grass and some trees," tance Benoit Kandel [DVD]. And the former first deputy of Christian Estrosi to question: "Where is the logic? At the same time, it concretes the rich agricultural land of the Var plain. "

The project should therefore make it possible to continue the Promenade du Paillon. The green space, inaugurated in late 2013 on 1.2 km long, had already required the destruction of the old Nice bus station and its hanging gardens. The cost of the site was around 40 million euros.

"This case represents a delusional sum"

"It is a new financial abyss that is coming, decides for its part the socialist Patrick Allemand. We thought we were done with the madness of grandeur with the underground of line 2 of the tram which indebted the city and the metropolis to the tune of 2 billion euros, but the father of the debt is back! Financially, this affair represents a delusional sum of at least 500 million euros and still years of construction in the heart of the city for Niçois.es who can no longer bear it. ”

"These massive, repetitive works never stop traumatizing the city," says Philippe Vardon. And the head of the list for the National Rally to judge that "Christian Estrosi no longer wants to be a builder mayor but now a demiurge mayor, transforming the city to his taste, in his hand".
