Some are ready for the greatest follies to register their name in the Guinness Book of Records . Vernon Kruger, a 52-year-old South African, chose to spend two months perched in a barrel, 25 meters above the ground, to beat his own record.

In 1997, he set a new approved world record for "longest (human) stay perched in a barrel". “I was on vacation on an island and climbed on a palm tree. Someone said to me "you look very comfortable, why don't you try to break the record?" ", He explains. “At the start it was a joke […] and then it became a challenge. "

"I can only rest in a fetal position"

Her 67-day, 14-minute record has not been broken since. And 22 years later, the Guinness Book of Records asked him to try to break his own record. On November 14, Vernon Kruger was hoisted in a 500-liter wine barrel on top of a 25-meter mast. "Sleeping in a barrel is not very easy," he says. “I have a lot of cramps and back pain. […] It is very narrow, I can only rest in the fetal position ”.

Like the Greek philosopher Diogenes in the fifth century BC, Vernon Kruger lived very poorly. Its only "comfort"? A hole evacuating its natural needs underground via a pipe. For everything else, he depends on his ground support team. "It's frustrating up there because there are very few things I can do on my own," he grumbles.

His ordeal came to an end on Monday. But the 50-year-old South African intends to extend it by a few days, in order to benefit from NGOs helping children and epilepsy patients, for which he raises funds. And also, a little, to keep its name in Guinness .
