20 January 2020 Validated arrest and pre-trial detention in prison. It is the decision of the investigating judge of the Court of Bologna, Francesca Zavaglia, against Rita Di Maio and her husband Claudio Furlan. Wife and husband are accused of poisoning the 63-year-old Vito Balboni, a friend of the couple, with drugs in order to rob him. Di Maio and Furlan allegedly stunned Vito Balboni with a mix of drugs to steal his ATM and withdraw around two thousand euros. The man was abandoned in a comatose state in the car where he later died.

The validation hearing was held this morning in the Bologna prison of Dozza. The couple, stopped last Thursday by the police, coordinated by the prosecutor Roberto Ceroni, confessed the episode, but reiterated that he had no intention of killing Vito Balboni, but only of robbing him. The corpse of the man was found on November 6 last (initially it was thought of a death due to illness), but death, as established by the autopsy, should go back to the day between 1 and 2 November. Balboni was left in the car by the couple on the night of October 31st.

Rita Di Maio and Claudio Furlan are therefore accused of death as a consequence of other crimes: multiple robbery, robbery and undue use of payment cards. Balboni died of cardiac arrest, but according to what emerged from the autoptic exam he would have remained in a comatose state for many hours before his heart gave way.

"My clients offered wide collaboration - explained the lawyer Giancarlo Tunno, lawyer of the accused couple - confessing their gesture, but reiterating that they did not want to kill him, but only to rob him. The autopsy also found that the victim suffered from a cardiac fragility that he was not aware of. " At the moment the lawyer is considering whether to apply to the Review Court. "Before doing so - I explained Tunno - I want to acquire more information about my clients, to highlight their cultural and psychological picture of people who used anxiolytic drugs and were followed by psychiatric structures".
