The French Navy demining divers intervention boat - Marine Nationale

An unusual ... and dangerous take. A fishing boat pulled up the remains of a German navy mine in its nets this Sunday off Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue (Manche). The astonishing discovery took place in a fishing area located 11 km from the coast.

The maritime operations center (COM) of the department was alerted shortly after 1:30 p.m. and sent the group of mine-clearing divers from the English Channel to the site. Three specialists went on the spot with a helicopter of the French Navy, reports La Presse de la Manche .

Postponement of the demining operation

But once on the boat, the deminers could not process the ammunition, an old German mine type BM 1000 dating from the Second World War. In question, "the bad weather and the difficulty of keeping the ammunition on board", specifies actu.fr.

The craft was returned to sea pending further intervention. As a safety measure, an urgent notice for boats circulating and fishing in the area was issued by the Maritime Operations Center of the French Navy, based in Cherbourg.
