At the winter solstice, which occurred on December 22, it turned around and the days slowly but surely longer. But from now on and a few months ahead, daylight is returning at a rapid pace.

- It is mainly in the northernmost part of the country that it is increasing the most now. It is from mid-January and during February we have this increase, says Charlotta Eriksson, meteorologist at SMHI.

Largest increase in the north

While the day length in the northernmost parts is now increasing by about ten minutes a day, the increase is more modest in the southern parts.

- In Götaland, it is not the largest increase in day length, but it nevertheless increases by about three, four minutes in large numbers, says Eriksson.

- In the southern part of the country it is from February and March to April that we have the biggest increase and then it is about four minutes a day.

But it should be brighter throughout the country, ”says Eriksson.

- I would say that it is possible to mark both in the south and in the north.

From polar night to midnight sun

It is mainly during the spring and autumn that the change in day length is rapid, according to SMHI. And why it is most drastic and noticeable at the far north is due to going from one extreme to another for one year - from polar night to midnight sun.

The fact that the increase in day length differs between the northern and southern parts of the country is due to the tilt of the earth axis, according to SMHI.

Can you see any other spring signs other than the day length already?

- From a purely meteorological point of view, it is precisely that the sun is beginning to notice more and more and rising higher in the sky, says Charlotta Eriksson.
