January 17, 2020 Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that Interior Minister Byorn Camilleri has received the resignation of the chief of police, Lawrence Cutajar. In recent weeks the nationalist opposition and civil society have asked for his resignation, after which, according to them, he would not have investigated alleged corruption cases involving, among others, the ex-minister Konrad Mizzi and the ex-chief of of the prime minister's office, Keith Schembri.

Abela explained that in the resignation letter, Cutajar said that changing the prime minister also requires a change in the leadership of the police, so that the new prime minister can begin to implement the desired police reform. However, Abela praised the work, as the case involving the murder of the Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, and said that this resignation will lead to the reform of the Police. After Cutajar's resignation, the oldest officer, Carmelo Magri, was temporarily appointed in his place. Meanwhile Abela said he will present a new system for choosing the police chief, which will be transparent and the new government is ready to listen to the views of the nationalist opposition.
