Bayer Leverkusen has extended the contract of its Dutch coach Peter Bosz until June 2022, the Bundesliga club announced on Friday.

Bosz, 56, arrived in Leverkusen in December 2018 after coaching Ajax Amsterdam and Borussia Dortmund in the past. For his first season, he qualified the team for the Champions League with a fourth place.

This season, the Bayer is halfway through 7th position nine points behind leader Leipzig, and has been eliminated in the group stage of the Champions League.

Peter Bosz "possesses the important quality of knowing how to continuously develop a team," commented Leverkusen sports director Rudi Völler, "we have ambitious goals and we are convinced that we can achieve them with Peter Bosz as head coach".

Bosz led Ajax to the Europa League final in 2017, lost to Manchester United (2-0). He had arrived in Dortmund haloed by this result, but his stay in the Ruhr had lasted only a few months: after a series of disastrous results, he had been dismissed in December 2017.
