The Great Mosque of Paris has a new rector: the lawyer of Algerian origin, Chems-eddine Hafiz, 65 years old presented this Thursday January 17 to the press his priorities.

Chems-eddine Hafiz succeeds Dalil Boubakeur who headed the institution for 28 years, before presenting his surprise resignation last weekend, for " personal reasons ".

" Middle Islam "

Alongside his predecessor, Dalil Boubakeur, who will have directed the Grande Mosquée de Paris for 28 years, Chems-Eddine Hafiz promises continuity. The promotion of an Islam of peace and harmony and for the new rector, this requires better communication. " We are going to be very present on the religious word because the Mosque of Paris has an identity in the multiple currents of Islam, affirms the new rector . It is the middle-ground Islam for the fight against radicalization and everything that can weaken our society today ”.

Rector @chemshafiz held a press conference this Thursday in the presence of Doctor Dalil Boubakeur. After a presentation and orientation speech, he answered all questions from journalists

Close to Algeria from Bouteflika

This succession comes a few days before the election of the president of the French Council of the Muslim worship, of which Dalil Boubakeur ensured the interim. In this capacity, he was the main interlocutor of the French authorities on questions related to Islam. Chems-eddine Hafiz has not ruled out being a candidate for the CFCM presidency to succeed Dalil Boubakeur there too. A role he will surely find it harder to take on.

The CFCM, a body created in 2003 by the State, is supposed to represent the Muslims of France but it is still seeking its legitimacy.

The new rector presents himself as the ideal partner of President Emmanuel Macron, " because we know today that we must build together the structures of Islam in France ".

Chems-eddine Hafiz will be fixed on Sunday, but his election to the CFCM is far from being won. His proximity to Abdelaziz Bouteflika's Algeria and his past as a lawyer for the Polisario Front, the Sahrawi independence movement, could play against him.
