The municipality of Boden has already laid out 2,000 tonnes of sand on roads, sidewalks and bus stops, which is a doubling compared to the same period last year.

"Sinking into the ice"

The problem is that demand for sand is so great right now that it is impossible to order more. According to production manager Stefan Andersson, only gravel applies when the slippery is to be fought in the future.

So those responsible must live on the hope that it will not be hot weather because then the sand shortage can put it.

- If it gets hot spring weather earlier than normal then the gravel has no effect. It drops into the ice and makes no effect. Then sand would have been more effective, he says.

"Just to grumble on"

Boden Municipality also does not believe in any major sand deliveries in the future and is about to rethink the anti-slip measures.

- We will ensure that the residents can get on our streets without having to slip around. It is possible to crush rocks into fine material that resembles the sand and that is probably what we will be able to do in the future, says Stefan Andersson.

The tractor driver Göran Vikberg is one of those who take care of the slip control and he thinks it is a shame that the sand has run out.

- The best thing would be a mixture of gravel and sand, but now the sand is out and then there is nothing to do about it. It is just grumbling and hoping that the winter weather lasts. Otherwise, there may be problems when the gravel drops, he says.
