January 16, 2020 Free way of the board of directors of Autostrade per l'Italia (Aspi) to the guidelines of the strategic plan 2020-2023, "which contains the main directions of transformation and change of the company". The company of the Atlantia group communicates this, underlining that the new plan "will put in place total resources by 2023 for 7.5 billion euros, divided between investments and maintenance costs of the network".

Password: innovation
The new plan "is focused on an overall modernization strategy of the network managed by Aspi, through a significant and constant strengthening of investments in new infrastructures and maintenance costs, on the strong enhancement of skills and human resources, on the digitization of assets and work processes, on a strong boost to sustainable mobility and connectivity, on safety on roads, construction sites and workplaces ".

The modernization plan
In 2020-2023, explains Autostrade per l'Italia, "investments were planned on the network for around 5.4 billion, which almost tripled the amounts invested by the company in the previous four years (around 2.1 billion). They rise to 1 , 6 billion in maintenance expenses (two billion also considered expenses in 2019), with an increase of 40% compared to the previous four years, in line with the discussions with the Ministry of Infrastructure ". These resources "will allow to complete within the next four years a plan to modernize the main strategic assets of the network such as bridges, viaducts, overpasses, tunnels, pavements, safety barriers.

Goal digitization
Expansions and upgrades of 30 km of the existing network are also foreseen, with opening to traffic by 2023. "The plan provides for" the complete digitalization of company procedures and work processes, through the adoption of the most advanced technological tools available on the market. A key element of this strategy is the creation, together with IBM, of an artificial intelligence platform that will allow monitoring of the 1,943 bridges and viaducts of the network. "The new platform" will be used by external companies in charge of monitoring activities and will be based on total transparency and information sharing (single data infrastructure, cloud systems architecture, use of big data) ".

Drones arrive
For the activation of the platform "several multifunction sensors are already being installed on the motorway network, thanks to which it will be possible to have continuous monitoring of the priority works of art and real-time information collection on traffic conditions and traffic control ( for example through dynamic weighing systems and exceptional transport tracking) ". "Drones equipped with automatic flight plans to further improve the monitoring of bridges and viaducts, as well as high-speed cameras, laser technologies and georadars for tunnel surveillance" will also be used. The total investment for the digitization of assets and organizational processes is equal to another 200 million, "which adds up to approximately 300 million of investments in software, hardware and other tangible and intangible assets owned".

Sustainability
"Significant innovations - underlines Autostrade per l'Italia (Aspi) - also on the sustainable mobility front. According to the logic of the green infrastructure, sustainable development and management of the network will be activated, including: construction of pitches with charging stations inside the main service areas to encourage the spread of electric mobility; enhancement of renewable energies also in favor of the services provided to motorists; reforestation actions necessary to compensate for CO2 emissions ".

Motorists at the center
The customer experience will be greatly improved, "by activating measures and solutions that focus on the needs of motorists, throughout the duration of the trip. For example, predictive traffic systems on all information channels on the network, interaction at toll booths with virtual agents, reduction of the response times of complaints, provision of reimbursements in case of highly critical inconvenience due to maintenance work ".

Smart signage
"An experiment will be launched - adds Aspi - to connect the entire motorway network in 5G mode and dynamic signage systems and 'smart lighting' communication technologies (adaptable to traffic situations or weather) will be introduced near junctions, tunnels, rest and service areas ".

Hiring is coming
In the new 2020-2023 strategic plan of Autostrade per l'Italia (Aspi) "a program of hiring a thousand people is foreseen among engineers, technicians, workers, highway workers and debt collectors who will be employed for the realization of the main activities contained in the plan" . This was stated by the company of the Atlantia group, underlining that "the guidelines provide for a strong enhancement of the skills and human resources present in the company through specific training and talent development programs".

"Safety on the road, on construction sites and in the workplace - adds Aspi - is considered one of the fundamental priorities for the development of the strategic plan. For this reason specific initiatives will also be developed in collaboration with the traffic police".

Minister De Micheli: "You have to be serious"
"When you do great things, you have to be serious: at this moment we have prepared the cards on motorway concessions and I want to share them with the rest of the government as well." So the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Paola De Micheli. " my opinion and I have it for a while, but I want to share it with the Prime Minister first. We must work for the good of the citizens who use the highways every day, we have to think about them ". And to those who point out that in the light of the ongoing investigations, several critical issues also emerge on the owners of Autostrade, the minister replies: "It is true, the Benettons do not come out well. However, to date there is no expropriation will, not there is a decision on the revocation procedure.
