Worst hit is the Pakistan-controlled part of Kashmir, where some 60 people have died in just one day, according to government officials. On the other hand, the disputed standstill line, in Indian-held Kashmir, states the death toll to ten.

The area has been divided between India and Pakistan since the countries became independent from the UK in 1947. Both India and Pakistan claim the entire territory and tens of thousands of people have been killed in conflicts in the border area.

In neighboring Afghanistan, snowfall and rainless landslides have contributed to some 40 deaths in recent weeks. And in western Pakistan, in Baluchistan, the weather has taken about 20 lives.

Large groups of rural residents are isolated due to inclement weather.
