The organizers of the Australian Open tennis tournament delayed the start of qualifying matches Wednesday in Melbourne due to the toxic fumes caused by the monster fires east of the city.

On Tuesday, Slovenian Dalila Jakupovic had to withdraw from the first round of qualifying after suffering from a violent coughing attack on the court. Qualifying matches will not start before 1:00 p.m. local time (2:00 a.m. GMT), one hour later than scheduled, and training is also suspended. The first Grand Slam tournament of the season is set to start on Monday.
