The first French jihadist sentenced to return from Syria has been released. He left the Condé-sur-Sarthe prison in Orne, this Monday, January 13. He will be placed under judicial supervision for a little less than a year.

His name is Flavien Moreau. After serving the 7-year prison sentence for "criminal association for the preparation of a terrorist act", he was released from detention.

This 33-year-old man of South Korean origin, converted to Islam a decade ago and repeatedly convicted of common law offenses, had radicalized during his stays in prison.

In 2012, he visited Syria. And it was while trying to return there a year later that he had been arrested, tried and sentenced again. In 2019, he received an appeal for an additional 6 months in prison for threatening the death of prison guards.

From now on, for almost a year, Flavien Moreau will have to appear regularly before a sentencing judge specializing in anti-terrorism. After the period of strict judicial control, he will remain under the surveillance of the intelligence services.
