One victim, who had been hospitalized in Australia for injuries, died. This person, whose identity has not been specified by the authorities, is the second to have died of his injuries in an Australian hospital. Police confirm "that a person died last night in an Australian hospital from injuries sustained during the White Island eruption," said John Tims, a senior police official.

Forty-seven people, mainly Australian tourists, were surprised on December 9 by this eruption. The majority of these people then visited the volcanic island, located in the north of New Zealand.
