“The presence of the British ambassador at a local meeting in Tehran is seen as a blatant interference in Iran’s internal affairs and a contradiction to the principles of diplomatic relations,” the ministry’s press service said in a statement.

It is noted that the Foreign Ministry calls on the British embassy in Tehran to "immediately stop any interference and provocative actions."

The ministry also said that if such actions continue, the Iranian Foreign Ministry will not limit itself to calling the ambassador.

“Each new British mistake will be met with a tough and appropriate response from Iran, the British government will be fully responsible for this,” the ministry said.

Earlier, the British Foreign Ministry expressed a strong protest to the Iranian ambassador in connection with the detention of the head of the British mission, Robert Makaire in Tehran.

Makair was detained on January 11 in Tehran at a university rally.

According to him, he came to the memorial service for the victims of the crash of a Ukrainian passenger plane, shot down by mistake on January 8 by the Iranian military.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said that the British ambassador was detained as an unknown foreigner at an illegal meeting and released 15 minutes later when his status was officially confirmed.

The Foreign Ministry of Britain, Germany and the European Union condemned the detention of Mackair.
