  • As part of the Non-Alcoholic Month, the CPAM of Ille-et-Vilaine is organizing an escape game to raise awareness of the risks of alcohol.
  • The authorities agree that excessive or regular consumption can be dangerous for those under 25 years of age.
  • The student context is often "incentive" according to a researcher.

It is almost a rite of passage to adulthood. Bac in pocket, students are used to migrating to cities to quench their thirst for knowledge. But not only. The transition to higher education is often accompanied by long, watered evenings, far from the parents' disapproving gaze. A practice obviously widespread in Rennes, which welcomes around 70,000 students, but which is not without risk. At the age when the brain is not yet in its adult form, excessive or regular consumption of alcohol can leave traces.

In an attempt to educate students, the CPAM of Ille-et-Vilaine relied on the alcohol-free month. Weakened by the absence of government support, the abstinence operation inspired by the British model seems to be a good way to hook the youngest around their consumption. "Our ambition is not to prohibit but rather to raise awareness, so that everyone can adopt good behavior for their health", explains the director of the CPAM of Ille-et-Vilaine Claudine Quéric.

To try to inform without barbering, the structure has developed an escape game which will be offered this Tuesday and Wednesday to the residents of a university city of Beaulieu, then in Villejean next week. "Talking about cholesterol or fat in the liver does not speak at this age. But to challenge in the context of a challenge, it can work, ”says Béatrice Le Devendec, in charge of prevention at the CPAM. In this game, participants are asked to think about whether or not to have a drink. “Ordering alcohol should not be a reflex or a norm. But in the student environment, the context is often encouraging. Anyone who shouldn't have to justify themselves, ”regrets Guylaine Benech, author of the book Les Ados et alcool.

"Being an adult does not mean being an adult"

The question is particularly significant in Brittany, which regularly ranks at the top of the "list" where young people get drunk the most. Beyond the risky behaviors that sometimes lead to drama, health professionals agree that consumption can be dangerous for those under 25 years of age. “Being an adult does not mean being an adult. It is estimated that the brain does not reach adulthood until around 24 years of age. Before that, the prefrontal cortex is not yet well connected ”, continues the public health consultant.

At this age more than at another, the consumption of alcohol amplifies certain phenomena. “It can exacerbate emotions, which can take precedence over reason. This can lead to risky behavior. We do not forget that they are partly children, ”says the researcher. In a brain that is still developing, addiction can also take hold faster. So many reasons to wonder before toast.
