The German public prosecutor's office opened an investigation after the discovery of a five-year-old girl in a state of extreme neglect, who, according to the press, lived without seeing the light of day for years. "Due to press reports, we have opened an investigation," Ogo prosecutor Ingo Kechichian, quoted by the German news agency DPA, said on Monday.

The regional daily Märkische Oderzeitung revealed on Saturday that the little girl who lived in Eberswalde, north of Berlin, had been completely neglected for at least two years. She lived cut off from the outside world and without seeing the light of day for several years.

The family known to social services since 2007

The girl, who was hospitalized on December 20, is far behind in her physical and mental development, the same source said. Her two siblings who lived in the same apartment were also found and placed in children's institutions.

The little girl's family had already been known to social services since mid-2007, according to local authorities quoted by the daily Bild. This case recalls the case in Cottbus, in the regional state of Brandenburg, of little Dennis who had been left without being able to eat or drink by his parents.

After the child's death, his mother hid his body in a freezer. It had only been discovered three years later by chance.
