“The Iranian regime has arrested the British ambassador to Iran,” wrote State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus on her Twitter.

The Iranian regime arrested the British ambassador to Iran. This violates the Vienna Convention, which the regime has a notorious history of violating. We call on the regime to formally apologize to the UK for violating his rights and to respect the rights of all diplomats.

Ortagus noted that this action violates the Vienna Convention, and that the Iranian government has been doing this for the first time.

“We urge the regime to apologize to Great Britain for violating his (ambassador - RT) rights, and we also call for respect for the rights of the dilemates,” she added.

Earlier, British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab said that the detention in Tehran of Ambassador Robert Makar is a violation of international law.

Robert Makar was detained for several hours for organizing the protests on Saturday, January 11, in Tehran.
