At least eight Katyusha rockets hit the Iraqi air base in Al Balad on Sunday, wounding four Iraqi soldiers . The nth attack against military installations that until now housed US troops is taking place in the middle of the rifirrafe between Baghdad and Washington, which refuses to negotiate the withdrawal of its military deployment required by Parliament.

According to Iraqi security sources, the projectiles have hit a base track , located in the province of Saladin, about 70 kilometers north of Baghdad. Some nearby buildings have also been damaged by the attack, said sources said. The facility, currently managed by the Iraqi air army, is the F-16 fighter aircraft headquarters.

Al Balad, who in 2014 was attacked and besieged by the hosts of the self-styled Islamic State , suffered a similar onslaught on January 4, a day after the death of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in an American drone attack at Baghdad International Airport . Then, the attack caused no casualties or material damage. Since that date there is no presence of US troops or other foreign contingents at the base.
