The US Defense Department accused the Russian navy Friday of acting "hostile" in the Arabian Sea after one of its ships nearly collided with an American warship.

The US Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, said in a statement this evening that a ship of the Russian naval forces was "very close" to a US Navy destroyer in the northern Arabian Sea on Thursday.

The Fifth Fleet stated that the American destroyer "USS Fragute" fired five warning sounds and asked the Russian ship to change course.

The statement added that "the Russian ship initially refused, but eventually changed its course."

"Although the Russian ship decided to act, the initial delay in complying with international laws as it approached in an aggressive manner increased the risk of a collision," said the fleet, which released a video of the incident.

The US military fleet continues to be vigilant, and it is trained to operate professionally. We continue to encourage ships of all countries to operate in compliance with internationally recognized laws, standards, and regulations for navigation, ”the statement concluded. The Russian Ministry of Defense did not immediately release any comment on this incident, according to the website of "Russia Today".

CNN quoted two defense officials as saying that the Russian ship approached 180 feet (about 55 meters) from the American ship, adding that it was working on surveillance and intelligence gathering, and bore the name "Ivan Khors."

Last June, the US Navy accused a Russian warship of circumventing in an unsafe manner by reaching 100 feet from the USS Chancellorsville, forcing the US ship to undertake an emergency maneuver to avoid collision.
