About 17,500 members of the Maltese Labor Party designate on Saturday 11 January the successor to Joseph Muscat affected by the scandal of the assassination of the journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. He must announce in the process that he is leaving his post as Prime Minister. Several of his relatives are implicated in the investigation and he is suspected of having wanted to protect them.

Two finalists compete to succeed Joseph Muscat: Robert Abela and Chris Fearne. They had to fight to convince the members of the Labor party, because the sympathy capital of the Prime Minister remains high despite the scandal and despite the massive demonstrations in recent weeks.

Favorite Chris Fearne is the current Deputy Prime Minister, Robert Abela is a business lawyer. Whoever takes the head of the government will have to find a difficult balance between continuity and distance, while Joseph Muscat calls to maintain the unity of the party.
